Hey, so I will be spending these next two months working in LA (primarily in Manhattan Beach and El Segundo). I have never been here before and am looking for suggestions for interesting things to do or sights to see, car related is a plus (cars & coffee and such).
I do not have access to a car, so something close by would be preferable, though if anyone has suggestions for a good, reasonably priced rental company that would be appreciated as well.

Go for Silver Car, haven't used them personally but looks like it's a good deal. Then take highway 1 up to Big Sur and spend a night in a yurt at Treebones

Hey, you're in my neck of the woods! The big car-related thing to do would be to go to the Peterson Automotive Museum, though you'd have to take the bus. El Segundo also has a car museum that I've never been to, but one of my friends volunteered at it a couple summers ago. I don't know if there's a C&C in Manhattan Beach or El Segundo, though.
The beach is the obvious place to visit, since you'll be right there. Dockweiler Beach is to the north, then El Segundo Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach to the south. If you have a bike you can ride along the bike path all the way up to Venice. There's a ton of bars and restaurants along the path in Venice and Manhattan/Redondo Beach and it's always lively.
Since you're in El Segundo, you're right by a Metro Rail stop, which can take you all over LA for cheap if you get a day pass. It'll take you downtown which is a great place to explore (downtown proper, Chinatown, little Tokyo, etc.), plus if you want to go to a Dodger game there's a free shuttle that takes ticketholders to and from Union Station downtown to Dodger Stadium up on the hill to the northwest.
Also, don't forget to eat at In N' Out or The Kettle in Manhattan Beach. You just have to.

that's an awesome suggestion. The road to Big Sur is amazing.
For closer trips there is the Snake and Ortega Hwy

Thanks, I had not heard of that before, seems to be a solid deal. I will likely only have one day off per week, so a hassle free, short term rental like that is ideal.

Something very un-car like but interesting:
Hit up Koreatown! Its a full city right in downtown LA with Korean everything, food, fun, shopping. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is something fun to do.

Definitely go to the Peterson Museum. Huge collection of stunning cars. Also, the Auto Gallery Dealerships seem to have some great exotics.

The reality is having a car in LA is really super useful, especially for the weekends. You might try SuperCheap Car Rentals, prices seem reasonable there although they aren't all over the region. Maybe just rent for the weekends. Also try to have your own insurance so you don't have to pay for it. If you manage to get a car :
for Oppos :
Obviously, the Petersen (although I'm not a huge fan of it, there's been some odd politics going on there)
Mullin Museum in Oxnard (comprises of some of Otis Chandlers collection-he was a publisher of LA Times and huge car guy)
http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/
Nethercutt Museum (not just cars either and a real gem in hiding)
http://www.nethercuttcollection.org/
Getty Museum (Brentwood)
Getty Villa (Pacific Palisades) one of my personal favorites :

California Science Center : see NASA SS Endeavor, Blackbird, Zipper, Tigershark :
http://www.californiasciencecenter.org/MainPage.php
Chino Hills Planes of Fame Museum : they have a flight schedule on their website - http://planesoffame.org/index.php?page=flight-schedule
There's a few car meets, pick one you like : http://www.socalcarculture.com/events.html
I usually go to Supercar Sunday in Canoga Park, I think J. Torch has an entry on that on Jalopnik.
For one really organized weekend in Rosamond, CA :
spend some time at
Edward AFB/NASA http://afftcmuseum.org/
then about half an hour away:
Willow Springs International Raceway; maybe get in a school, or if you have an in with someone, track day? http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/
Frys Electronics in Manhattan Beach (if you're a tech geek and need some parts); not in its glory days but still worth a visit just to see whats out there on the racks.
Drive Mulholland, Sunset, Hollywood loop; do it early in the morning, like 5:30-6:00AM on the weekend; if you're adventurous, do the loop from the top of the Sepulveda pass, Mulholland across all the way down to Hollywood, get to Sunset back to all way to the ocean, take PCH up the coast up to Calleguas Creek Rd. Take it to Potrero Rd. to W. Potrero Rd all the way to the 23 (aka Westlake Blvd), turn oceanward to get to Mulholland, take it eastward all the way to Old Topanga Canyon, take Old Topanga oceanward to get back to PCH. Take PCH to whereever you want. Plenty of good eats all along. Take a GPS and a smaller car, it'll be fun. Stop at the Rock Store in Topanga and just watch, that's fun too.
Drive to Santa Barbara, start in the early AM again by 405/101 to beat the traffic and come back late at night via PCH
Drive to Dana Point down south via PCH starting in Huntington Beach
Go to San Gabriel if you like Chinese food, go to Din Tai Fung in Arcadia :
(address for DTF #2, #1 is literally just around the corner)
1088 S. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia,
CA 91007
(if you like "trendy, hip" dumplings, go to Glendale and go to Din Tai Fung #3 at the Americana Mall)
Address: 171 Caruso Ave, Glendale, CA 91210
Phone:(818) 551-5561
